City waste disposal and utilitising for common purposes in social upliftment area has been a great challenge for authorities and general public figures. Why can we not organise in practical manner considering our Indian ways of domestic living and cultural practices to solve the complex problem of subject matter. Many schemes are attempted in the past and many may be in pipeline, but none have really got a sustained life and impact on city general cleanliness with regard to domestic and some commercial establishment wastes lying all over. Pinpointing responsibility or passing the buck or giving valid and irrelevant excuses for not clearing the mess is order of the day for concerned authorities and employees and contractors alike. I do not want to go into the merit and demerits of present system and wish to draw attention that it is desirable to give serious attempt for finding everlasting solution even if tough measure are to be adopted.
I think if waste collection and its segregation into different grades/categories is done at locality level by the respective safai workers and these different items are picked up under contract by bigger contractor for supplying to manufacturers of certain products from the waste the situation should improve remarkably. It would be necessary for the bigger contractor to pay the collectors in cash on the spot on daily basis or weekly basis, contractor in turn should get part payment from authorities and part payment from manufacturer or consumer of the product.
